Defective tyres represent a growing number of MoT failures in the HGV sector, with statistics recorded by VOSA showing that an MoT failure rate of 36.5 percent was recorded in 2007/8, with ‘condition of tyres’ ranking as the second most common failure defect. The new TyreSafe web pages contain invaluable tyre safety advice for all members of the commercial vehicle community, including fleet managers, workshop managers, fleet inspectors and drivers and are designed to be informative and easily accessible.

Two new Mercedes-Benz ambulances help meet the growing demand for rescue transportation which cares for overweight and intensive care patients

Essen, Germany – To ensure the appropriate medical care and safe transportation of the increasing number of obese patients, as well as those in intensive care, the municipal fire brigade in Essen, Germany, has enlisted the support of two specially adapted ambulances. The Mercedes-Benz Vario 818D (177 PS) vehicles, equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions, are 30 cm wider than regular ambulances and include features such as heavy duty stretchers capable of bearing up to 750 kg, electric hydraulic tail lifts, 230 volt generators and 2.3 kVA inverters.

BP Gas is benefitting from the arrival of four new Renault Trucks equipped with Allison fully automatic transmissions. The 18-tonne rigid Midlums were specified as part of a fleet replacement programme to increase efficiency, cut vehicle component maintenance and replacement costs, and improve driver comfort on deliveries to domestic, commercial, industrial and agricultural customers in Scotland and the North of England.  Working out of three BP LPG gas depots in the north of the UK – Cairnhill in Aberdeenshire, Carlisle and Evanton in Rosshire – the new tankers allow the logistics team to maximise bulk capacity via a chassis which can adeptly handle steep, windy, single track roads from the Lake District to the Scottish Highlands.
