Ground-breaking multi-voltage DC-DC technology wins funding to develop technology for manufacture using silicon carbide   Print
The new, flexible converter handles multiple voltages simultaneously on both the input and output sides. Silicon Carbide technology cuts its size to around one third that of traditional Silicon technologies. Thursday, 22nd November 2012

Flexible multiport converter may replace multiple separate DC-DC converters on future hybrid & electric vehicles, saving cost, weight and space and increasing EV range by up to 20%

The success of a research project to develop a multi-voltage DC-DC converter has led to funding from the UK government's Technology Strategy Board (TSB) to develop the technology for manufacture. The converter, which provides a variety of voltages across the vehicle, uses silicon carbide to increase efficiency while significantly reducing the weight and packaging volume required compared to alternative solutions. Silicon carbide technology also has the potential for high temperature operation and reduced system cost.

Supporters offered rare components and names on the bomb-bay doors to raise money for critical winter maintenance

Vital work on the Winter Service needed to return the world's last flying Vulcan to the skies is being suspended due to a lack of cash. Dr. Robert Pleming, chief executive of the charity that operates the aircraft, told supporters that although a heartening £75,000 had been raised over the last month, a further £325,000 must be raised by the New Year to complete the first phase of the Vulcan's winter service. "There is now a significant risk that insufficient money will be found in time to prepare the Vulcan for the first displays of the 2013 season," he said. "To conserve funds, work on the aircraft will stop following engine tests mid-November."
