Lightweight wheel improves electric vehicle driving range and economy
Alcoa Automotive Wheels, a division of Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products, announced today that it has been awarded the wheel programme for the Chevy Volt.
“Alcoa is pleased to supply forged aluminium wheels for the Volt. Working closely with the GM team resulted in a wheel designed, engineered and manufactured for light weight performance that will further extend the range of this alternative propulsion vehicle,” said Mike Parnell, Vice President and General Manager – Alcoa Auto Wheels.

Garages and tyre retailers can play their part in helping motorists stay safe on the roads this winter by advising them to consider cold weather tyres
TyreSafe is calling on garages and tyre retailers to educate motorists on the benefits of fitting cold weather tyres to improve road safety and reduce the number of road traffic accidents. Despite the change in road conditions at the onset of winter, many drivers continue to drive on standard tyres. Slippery roads accounted for 55 percent of road traffic accidents in which road environment was a contributory factor in 2007, according to Department for Transport (DfT) figures.

Delphi Focuses on Ease-of-Assembly Safety and Controls Systems for Daimler’s Smart Vehicles
TROY, Mich. – Delphi Corporation (PINKSHEETS: DPHIQ) is providing its first prepackaged driver side airbag assembly in the steering wheel for the Smart Fortwo vehicle made by Daimler. With winter fast approaching, TyreSafe is advising motorists to consider fitting cold weather tyres in order to improve road safety and reduce the number of accidents on the road. Despite the change in road conditions at the onset of winter, many drivers continue to drive on standard tyres. Slippery roads accounted for 55 percent of road traffic accidents in which road environment was a contributory factor in 2007, according to Department for Transport (DfT) figures. In November 2007, the DfT recorded a spike in personal injury accidents as drivers were caught out by the drop in temperature and increased rainfall, with 16,559 accidents recorded, nearly 700 more accidents than at any other time in the year.

New techniques developed at test specialist Millbrook will allow these differences to be measured accurately and repeatably for the first time, helping fleet managers identify small improvements that add up to big savings.
