AUSTIN, TX – Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that his electric vehicle (EV) company has manufactured over three million cars to date, with a third of that impressive number being comprised of models that were made at a factory located in Shanghai, China.
Musk made the announcement via a tweet, where he posted a picture of the Chinese Tesla factory’s workers gathered around the millionth EV to officially roll off of their assembly line.
“Congrats Giga Shanghai on making millionth car! Total Teslas made now over 3M,” Musk said.
This milestone was reached despite long periods of business closures mandated by the Chinese government in an attempt to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with mass shortages on parts, all of which cast doubt on the Shanghai Tesla factory’s ability to produce an adequate number of vehicles since opening in 2019, but Musk’s announcement appears to indicate that their production capacity is, in reality, at a high level.
In addition to Shanghai, Tesla also has car factories in Fremont, California; Austin, Texas; and Berlin, Germany.
Tesla as a company is also reporting some recent successes, announcing in July that in the second quarter of 2022 they had delivered 254,695 EVs, which represents a 26.5 percent increase over the number delivered in the second quarter of 2021.
However, while that degree of success is noteworthy for a smaller manufacturer like Tesla, it also underscores the differences between Musk’s company and some of the larger, more established car-makers on the block; for example, Toyota – one of the largest manufacturers in the world – delivered more than 10 million vehicles in 2021 alone.
But never one to be outdone, Musk recently indicated his intention to bump up the number of Tesla deliveries by as much as 50 percent each and every year going forward, based on demand for the high-tech EVs.
