Allison Transmission, the world’s leading supplier of commercial duty automatic transmissions, trusted to drive six Renault Sherpas over harsh conditions

Renault Trucks has chosen Allison technology to make its 30,000 km “Cape to Cape” challenge as smooth and reliable as possible. Starting on March 1st, 2009 and for the following 16 weeks, a team of drivers will drive from the North Cape in Norway to Capetown in South Africa, alternating between twelve adventure trucks, six of which are the new Renault Sherpa model. All six Sherpas are equipped with a standard Allison 2500SP automatic transmission with 6 forward and 1 reverse speeds.

Allison-equipped CNG trucks deliver the goods for French supermarket fleet   Print  
A fleet of 26 CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) trucks equipped with Allison?s automatic transmission is being run by the French supermarket chain Monoprix in Paris, in a proactive move to cut pollution and increase productivity. Tuesday, 24th February 2009

Reduced noise and air pollution make CNG trucks with a fully automatic transmission an ideal candidate for inner city deliveries, and with lower operating costs, fleet managers in Paris are reaping the rewards.

A fleet of 26 CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) trucks equipped with Allison’s automatic transmission is operating in Paris in a proactive move to cut pollution and increase productivity. The French supermarket chain, Monoprix, has run the vehicles since April 2008, as part of its commitment to meet forthcoming emissions legislation (Euro 6 standards, 2012).

Helmets with ARPRO lining lighter yet safer

A material that offers increased crash protection in a reduced package has been selected by Stand 21 for its latest range of IVOS race helmets. Requiring 67 percent less density, ARPRO improves safety by providing superior impact-resistance and energy absorption.

“With ARPRO, we decreased the material density in our helmets from 52 g/l to 35 g/l without any detriment to safety performance,” explains Gerald Bonnet, Head of Research and Development at Stand 21. “And in terms of service, supply and engineering expertise we found JSP very proactive.”

TyreSafe is calling on the tyre trade to support Bike Tyre Safety Month as MoT failure statistics show that the number of bike tyre defects is growing year on year

In the run-up to April’s Bike Tyre Safety Month, TyreSafe is calling on tyre retailers to help raise awareness of the importance of tyres in bike safety, as many bikers take to the roads for their first ride of the spring. Despite the fundamental functions that tyres provide to bikers in terms of efficient handling, suspension and braking, statistics from VOSA reveal that in 2007-8, defective or illegal tyres was recorded as the fourth most common MoT failure defect. Worryingly, the number of MoT failures attributed to defective tyres has grown year on year for the past three years, increasing from 2.8 percent of motorcycles tested in 2005-6 to 4.8 percent in 2007-8. Meanwhile, motorcycle fatality rates remain high, with Department for Transport figures showing that in 2007, 588 motorcyclists died in road traffic accidents, accounting for 20 percent of all fatalities on the road.

The Volkswagen Group UK Ltd has affirmed its commitment to driver safety and responsible motoring by becoming the first vehicle manufacturer to join tyre safety organisation TyreSafe. The five brands which make up the Group - Audi, SEAT, Škoda, Volkswagen and Volkswagen CommercialVehicles - have become full members and will participate in a series of national campaigns highlighting the importance of tyres in road safety.

New machine interface makes choosing music in the car safer, simpler and lighter.

A human machine interface (HMI) that simulates a traditional CD changer interface to simplify music selection is being developed by Alpine Electronics. The functionality makes it easier to sort music files into virtual CDs with corresponding buttons.  Buttons on the head unit, numbered one to six correspond to “virtual CDs” that have been downloaded.  With no six disc mechanism, the unit is 50 percent lighter than a standard in dash changer.
